SSBL Travel Softball

Overview

The mission of the SSBL Travel Softball program is to provide an environment and a culture that instills the values of hard work, commitment and sportsmanship for players enthusiastic about playing softball at a more competitive level.  Players are expected to develop softball skills, game IQ, confidence and leadership abilities, while demonstrating a commitment to a high percentage of games and practices.

Eligibility

In order to participate in SSBL Travel Softball, players must:

  • Participate in the SSBL Recreational Softball program; plus
  • Have played at least one season of SSBL Recreational Softball (1st Grade Instructional League or higher) in a prior year; plus
  • Meet age requirements as set forth by USA Softball:
    • 8U: Born on or after September 1, 2016
    • 10U: Born between September 1, 2014 and August 31, 2016
    • 12U: Born between September 1, 2012 and August 31, 2014
    • 14U: Born between September 1, 2010 and August 31, 2012

Note: The age divisions above are applicable to the year beginning September 1, 2025 and ending August 31, 2026.

Teams

SSBL Travel Softball teams are formed on a season-by-season basis using data and feedback from tryouts/assessments, travel and recreational softball coach evaluations, and commitments made to prior teams, clinics and trainings.  Tryouts are conducted by an independent third party.

Historically, SSBL Travel Softball teams have played in the USA Softball New Jersey District 2 Parkway League.  We aim to compete against similar teams in the North / Central New Jersey area.  Most away games are 15-30 minutes from Summit, with a handful slightly farther.

Seasons

Spring

The Spring Travel Softball season typically consists of five double-header regular season weekends (10 games), followed by a single-elimination playoff tournament.  Games are typically played on Sundays, with the exception of Easter and Mother’s Day weekends.  The season typically begins in late March and ends by late May.

The Spring Travel Softball program is designed to not interfere with the SSBL Recreational Softball program.  Travel teams typically begin to practice in March before the regular season begins, but during the season travel practices will be less frequent in order to give way to SSBL Recreational Softball practices and games.
